CDD Society provides “Faecal Sludge Management Solutions” in 4 towns, under the “Third Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project”, Nepal


The Third Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project (3STWSSSP) funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) supports the Government of Nepal in providing water supply and sanitation services to selected small towns in Nepal. Technical assistance (TA) was initiated by the ADB to provide “Faecal Sludge Management Solutions for first batch towns under the Third Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project” with the intention of evolving appropriate solutions.

CDD Activities

BORDA carried out primary and secondary data surveys in landscaping the existing sanitation systems and institutional arrangements. Based on the outcome of this study, a team of experts devised a broad framework for various treatment options, which were then evaluated in consultative meetings with stakeholders in selected towns. For this the faecal sludge management plan CDD Society followed a consultative approach in framing the problem and delivering solutions appropriate to the context and requirements of the stakeholders:

  • Treatment technologies for faecal sludge treatment
  • Institutional and governance framework for the recommended treatment facility
  • IEC framework
  • 4. Business model for operations and maintenance of the treatment facility
  • 5. Operational and maintenance plan for the proposed treatment facility

These recommendations would be considered by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of Nepal, and based on the successful outcomes, further such plans would be implemented across the remaining 10 towns as part of the 3STWSSSP.
